Jaflong Tandoori — authentic Indian cuisine

Est. 2008 • Richmond upon Thames

The Way Indians Eat
at Home

Syed had a nagging obsession to build a restaurant serving the kind of food his grandmother made in Sylhet — where spices were ground by hand and every dish told a story. In 2008, that obsession became Jaflong Tandoori.

Family-run since 2008

A hardworking family kitchen, still trying to be the best in town

Jaflong Tandoori is owned and run by the Syed family. Our proprietor, Syed Bashar, is usually in the restaurant himself — greeting guests, checking plates before they leave the pass and calling suppliers first thing in the morning. There is no head office and no chain playbook, just a family that takes every review personally.

That means we improve in small steps rather than big announcements: a curry base retested, a delivery route tightened, a dish rewritten on the menu because guests kept asking for it milder. We have kept a 5/5 Food Hygiene Rating and a 4.9 average across 5,700+ reviews by treating both as something to protect, not something to advertise once and forget.

Our meat comes from trusted halal suppliers. We are not a separately certified halal premises, and we would rather say that plainly than let anyone assume otherwise.

The Beginning

From Sylhet
to Richmond

Syed's journey began in Sylhet, Bangladesh — a region famous for its tea gardens, rolling hills, and intensely flavourful cuisine. Growing up, food was the centre of family life. His grandmother's kitchen was where spices were ground by hand, where recipes were passed down through generations, and where Syed first learned that cooking is an act of love.

Arriving in the UK in the 1980s, Syed started at the bottom of the restaurant industry — working as a waiter in Kingston upon Thames. But he wasn't just serving tables. He was learning. Every shift, he studied the kitchen, the flavours, the management, the relationships between staff and guests. Within a decade, he was leading family-run restaurant teams across South West London.

Years of hospitality expertise

"A restaurant isn't a building — it's the people inside it. I've spent 40 years learning that the best food comes from teams who feel valued, ingredients that are respected, and communities that are genuinely served."

The Vision

More Than
a Restaurant

Syed always had a vision: his own restaurant. One where the food honoured his Sylheti roots. Where every guest was treated like family. Where the community wasn't just a customer base — but a partner.

In 2008, that vision became Jaflong Tandoori — named after the breathtaking Jaflong waterfall region in Sylhet. And 18 years later, it's still a family affair. Syed's two sons now work alongside him, ensuring the next generation carries the Jaflong legacy forward.

The recently renovated dining room (2025/26) represents the next chapter — a space worthy of the food and the community Jaflong serves. Private dining, celebrations, events — all under one roof, all prepared with the same care that started in Syed's grandmother's kitchen in Sylhet.
